| canon | The Legend of Korra
| character name | Kuvira
| character age | 18

| gem | Day
| reason | She’ll be a series main antagonist in a few years, but her intentions are pure and altruistic. Even in her villain days she will wholeheartedly believe she is working for the people.
| wings | these no, no.

Snowberry Clearwing wings, with the veins and edges in more metallic silvery colors. Clearwings are actually moths who shed the scales on their wings soon after emerging, but their wings are narrow and look so Day Gem - is that okay?

| personality | As a child Kuvira was abandoned by her parents “like I meant nothing to them”, which affected her profoundly. From Suyin she could expect pride in her accomplishments, not unconditional love. An apt pupil, she feels the need to work to be “good enough”, values validation and praise, and may struggle to handle some criticism well. Some of Suyin’s views, like that hereditary rulers are a bad idea, that it’s good to give people second chances and guidance, and that betrayal is unforgivable, have been taken to heart.

A reserved and private person, she tends towards precision in her speech and stoicism in her manner, though she enjoys the adrenaline of dancing and having the upper hand in a fight and can be overconfident. Sometimes she’ll taunt opponents into making mistakes. When no one else will step up and take charge, she does it herself.

In the looting and chaos following the murder of the Earth Queen Kuvira felt that the people were helpless and abandoned just as she had been. Doing something about it, spreading the prosperity and opportunities she had enjoyed in Zaofu, seemed a moral imperative. Refusing was unthinkable and personal. Her name means “courageous woman”, and it fits! Kuvira is stubborn, all but fearless, and determined to succeed.

As Guard-Captain in Zaofu she’s dutiful and typically soft spoken, firm but respectful. She goes to great effort to save an ally and tends him with concern. While she is stoic and not terribly expressive or emotional, she is easily kind. She is deferential trying to convince Suyin to change her mind and help with the situation in the Earth Kingdom, but met with a flat refusal she quickly decides to gather allies and abandons the city.

She will become caught up in the task, in having to make tough choices working for her goal, and in her own image as a brilliant cold badass. She will make some unethical choices, some very ruthless, while still believing she is working for the good of all. As villains go she will never be ‘evil’ - she will provide, limit casualties, and try to take the high road, placing her goal above her own happiness or any one person’s life.

But that’s not happening yet.

| background | Here!

| timeline | Post-Book Three finale. The Avatar is too injured to help with the crumbling state of the Earth Kingdom, but President Raiko has not yet asked Suyin to do something about it.

| abilities | Kuvira's non-special talents are her physical flexibility, balance, agility, and speed, all quite notable. She had a star role in Suyin's dance troupe, where practice involved cabling up to a high ceiling, dropping to the floor, and being flung up again. She's also charismatic and intelligent.

Kuvira is an Earthbender. She can move earth and stone at will, in broad or subtle ways, and she is good at it. However, her primary focus is metalbending, moving and shaping most metals with gestures. With a spool of metal cable at each hip she was able to scale a steep cliff, catch herself when falling, and rescue a falling man at least twice her weight. The cables are her main offensive weaponry, able to strike or tangle and impede foes, but all of her armor has a use. She’s not at the point yet of able to bend strips off it and cuff or slice people from a distance, though.

What she can bend she can also sense - she has a feeling for where the ground is, and if people have dirt, stone, coal or metal on their persons. There are some metals she cannot bend.

| prose sample | Was this the work of spirits? Maybe the Queen’s death or the kingdom’s reaction to it had set something off. But for all the reports of unrest there hadn’t been any of people miraculously disappearing, and Kuvira found it difficult to believe that she would be the first taken. Zaofu hadn’t participated in the kind of environmental or spiritual degradation that made spirits angry, even if they were rarely seen there.

This place did look something like she supposed some part of the Spirit World might, though it seemed more tame than she’d expected. The spiderweb she could not pass seemed to fit though, and the opening in the ceiling that her cables couldn’t grasp. She tried, several times, and paced under it in frustration. She could sense things she could bend moving around up there, which meant there were people carrying them, and maybe answers.

Guard-Captain Kuvira had a duty to Zaofu. She hated to imagine what could be happening back there, and in the rest of the world, while she was trapped here unaware.

Maybe she could bend the stone in this… chamber. These enormous gems were unfamiliar to her. She approached the yellow one that caught her eye and brushed it with her fingers, trying to get a sense of it with her bending. A part of it separated, then, like jennamite, and came off in her hand.

Feeling something move on her back, erupt from it, Kuvira flinched and instinctively bent her cuirass down, crumpling the metal out of the way of - she took half of a step turning, trying to see, but they turned with her, moving with her surprise. She stopped herself and put her helmet under her arm so she could turn her head freely, and saw them.

Spirits, she thought, mouth opening. She closed it, thinking rapidly. All right. That had happened. Kuvira forced her attention away from the wings and into the gleaming stone in her hand. Opening her palm she gripped it with her bending and raised it. Once it wasn’t in contact with her skin, the wings vanished.

So she tested them, grasping the gem again and taking short hops. It seemed the wings were an accommodation to this place, and if she wanted to be able to move freely, she had better be able to keep a hold of it. She bent an opening in her arm guard and set the gem into that, adjusting things until she was sure of it, and then adjusted her armor so it didn’t impede the wings, and didn’t look unprofessional about that, either. Only then did she start upwards.

She’d always loved zipping through the air, or being in a controlled fall. Kuvira wiped the smile off her face. She had to get back home to people who needed her.
